Poppy
Wood, basalt pebble, sandstone
I surfed the internet one day and came across this piece which was labelled as a ‘wooden sculpture’ for sale. It immediately held my attention and imagination and I had to buy it. After cleaning and restoring some areas I needed to give it a centre. The black pebble from North Devon fitted into the basin like a glove and the black centre combined with the shape of the ‘petals’ gave it the name ‘Poppy’. A sturdy branch became its stem which was grounded in a sand stone base in order to give it stability. A breakage after an exhibition made it necessary to shorten the stem and this led to imbalance of the poppy. I finally found the solution in form of a wedge in 2023.
